It all begins with an idea.
Angelo’s Story — Since 1965
What started as a simple idea in a garage became one of Taylorville’s longest-standing local traditions. Angelo’s Pizza was founded in December of 1965 in Taylorville, Illinois, built on hard work, family values, and a passion for serving great food to the community.
The original owner, Don Marsango, was a Pepsi delivery driver who traveled throughout central Illinois servicing many of the original Angelo’s Pizza locations in the Springfield area. During the 1950s through the 1970s, there were more than 10 Angelo’s Pizza restaurants spread across central Illinois, each locally operated but connected through the Angelo’s name and tradition.
Inspired by the success and popularity of those restaurants, Don brought Angelo’s to Taylorville — starting in a small garage operation before eventually establishing a permanent home at 404 W. Spresser Street.
As the business continued to grow, so did the building itself. Over the decades, Angelo’s expanded through multiple remodels and additions to better serve the community. One of the most unique parts of Angelo’s history was the relocation of three nearby houses to create additional parking and improve accessibility for customers.
For nearly six decades, Angelo’s has remained family owned and operated through the partnership and dedication of two families — the Marsangos and the McDowells. Together, they helped shape Angelo’s into more than just a pizza restaurant. It became a gathering place for families, celebrations, teams, community events, and memories shared across generations.
Today, Angelo’s continues to grow while staying true to the small-town values and traditions it was built on back in 1965.
